FAQS

Here you can find out the answers to the most common questions I get from people.

How do you bring a puppy form Canada into the United States?

The current rules for bring a puppy into the United States from Canada are that your puppy does not require its rabies as Canada is considered a low-risk country. However you must provide written or oral proof that the puppy has lived in a low-risk country for the past 6 months or since birth. Please click here for more information.

Is the Braque Francais type Pyrenees related to the German Short-Haired Pointer?

No the Braque Francais type Pyrenees is not related to the German Short-Haired Pointer (GSP).  In fact the Braque Francais type Pyrenees is older than GSP's by about 200 years and was not involved in the creation of the GPS at all. You can really see the difference in the Braque Francais type Pyrenees and the GSP when they are side by side, in the photo below a GSP in on the left and Ivy (our Braque Francais type Pyrenees) is on the right.

How is the Braque Francais type Pyrenees different from the GSP and Vizsla?

The clear main visual difference in the Braque Francais type Pyrenees is the size when compared to the GSP and the Vizsla. Braque Francias are a smaller lighter dog being anywhere from 35 lbs, for the small light females, up to 50 lbs, for the large heavy males. I also get asked if there is a difference in temperament in this breed when compared to other hunting dogs and of course there is. While the Braque Francais is a high energy dog with excellent natural hunting instincts they are quite calm in the house and spend most there time napping while indoors.

How are Braque Francais type Pyrenees in the cold?

Braque Fracias have a single layer coat they do not have any undercoat at all. In the fall adults may need a light jacket on very cold days and in the winter they may need a heavier jacket and boots in the very cold. Puppies tend not to handle the cold very well and will need jackets for their first fall and winter. This is based on the weather that we get here in Canada where is can go down to -30 degrees Celsius with ice and deep snow in the winter.

What is a better hunting dog a male or a female?

Both male and females Braque Francais type Pyrenees are excellent hunting dogs and require little training to get out in the field.  In my personal experience females tend to mature faster than the males and can be out hunting a little sooner than the males.  However I have also found that females tend to be more stubborn than the males in terms of training.  When choosing a male or a female for your hunting companion with the Braque Francais type Pyrenees either will do.
